An asphalt shingle is a type of wall or roof shingle. They are one of the most widely used roofing covers in North America because they have a relatively inexpensive up-front cost and are fairly simple to install.

Shake Shingle

A shake is a basic wooden shingle that is made from split logs. Shakes have traditionally been used for roofing and siding applications around the world. Higher grade shakes are typically used for roofing purposes, while the lower grades are used for siding purposes.

Slate Shingle

Slate is actually a metamorphic rock comprised of minerals and clays that has been exposed to extended periods of pressure. Slate for roofing is a material that took considerable time to form. Geologists pinpoint slate formation to have taken place between 435 and 570 million years ago. It is interesting to note that slate makeup varies by quarry location; the minerals that were present at that time of material formation directly influenced quality and color.

Tile Roofing

Tile is more expensive than asphalt shingles, usually at least double the price. However, the life expectancy of tile ends up being about double that of shingles, so it works out to be about even in that regard. One consideration is that high winds and bad weather can knock off your shingles much more easily than with tiles. Tiles are more durable and can withstand a lot more strain.

Flat Roofing/Torch

A flat roof is a type of covering for a building or home addition. In contrast to the more sloped form of roof, a flat roof is horizontal or nearly horizontal. The slope of a roof is properly known as its pitch: Roofs which are nearly flat are known as low-pitch roofs. A torch down roof is a type of roll roofing applied to relatively flat roofs with a torch, to impart sealing between courses of roofing material.

TPO/PVC Roofing

The term TPO stands for Thermoplastic Polyolefin. TPO is actually in a broad family of rubber roofing materials. TPO is a blend of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber. PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride. PVC materials are produced by a chemical reaction, known as polymerization. (Polymers are a natural or synthetic compound that consist of large molecules made of many chemically-bonded smaller molecules, known as monomers.) PVC is produced by the gaseous reaction of ethylene with oxygen and hydrochloric acid.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is an alternative well worth exploring. Metal is your most durable choice for roofing materials. Because of their durability, metal roofs offer a significant cost savings over the long term. They require little to no maintenance, and stand up to inclement weather with ease. Of course, they also offer more protection than standard shingles, as they will not catch fire or collapse due to heavy snowfall.
